While it had no bearing on the outcome of the game, the Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins engaged in a bit of interesting gamesmanship during the early stages of last night's game, which resulted in umpire Joe West's instructing Phillies starter Brett Myers to cover the tattoo that encircles his left forearm.

Florida, apparently annoyed at the request, responded by asking the umpires to require Myers to cover up his tattoo, citing it as a distraction to the Marlins hitters.

The move is not unprecedented. It gained notoriety in 2004 when Major League Baseball began requiring then-Toronto reliever Justin Miller to cover his heavily inked arms with sleeves after receiving complaints that they distracted hitters.

"It wasn't that hot. I'm from Florida. It wasn't a big deal. It had nothing to do with the way I pitched."

On the 22nd August 2008 I went around the Limbang and Lawas districts in Sarawak. My friends and I drove to the interior of Limbang on rough gravel road. We reached the last frontier at Long Napir, 4 hours drive away. There we spotted an elderly lady with tattoo on her hands and legs. She is the only old people of the village who has the tattoo. Her picture could not be loaded today but I will put it up soonest.

In the old days the process of tattooing was painful. The rudimentary tools consisted of a nail or a needle attached to a rotan stick. The rotan then was beat down in a manual way with a stick held on the right hand. It was rough and painful. In the old days the louder you groan the better. It was a way of telling the whole longhouse dwellers, from end to end, that your were going through the tattoo rituals. It was a sound of ecstasy many would hear. They heard your groan as pleasurable groan while at the same time telling everybody that you were a brave man. You would be loved by ladies and feared by fellow men.
